About Gottschalks
Gottschalks is a regional department store chain headquartered in Fresno,
California. German immigrant Emil Gottschalk, who described the business as
"the store that cares", founded it in 1904. This remains the company motto.
What began as a 10,000 square foot dry goods store in downtown Fresno has now
grown into a chain with 63 department stores and 10 specialty stores throughout
six western states: California, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Nevada.
It is the largest independently owned department store chain based in
California.
Gottschalks' vision is to provide customers with quality, brand-name
merchandise, a large selection, competitive prices and, above all, the best
customer service in the business.
In 1986, Gottschalks became a public company traded on the New York Stock
Exchange under the symbol GOT. Joe Levy, the Chairman, is the grand nephew of
Emil Gottschalk.
In 1995, Gottschalks brought its retail business online. We strive to continue
improving our website, incorporating new technology as it arises in order to
make our online store as comfortable and easy to shop as one of our traditional
stores. We hope you enjoy shopping with us.
In 1998, Gottschalks acquired the nine-store chain of Harris Department Stores
to increase our presence in the Southern California market.
In 2000, Gottschalks acquired the 34-store, Seattle-based, Lamonts department
store chain, adding stores in three new states.
